My Running Shoes: Nike LunarGlide+ Review

By On October 1, 2009 Under Life, Sports

During my high school days, I wasn’t good at sports. We get even lesser exercise especially when we start to work. I didn’t intend to buy any running shoes few weeks ago. Until recently I visited Nike web site, although I really don’t love it because of their slow loading flash.

From Nike’s Footware Finder page, I get to know my feet belong to medium arch and I have underpronated feet!

  1. Overpronation: 45% runners
  2. Neutral: 55% runners
  3. Underpronation: 5% runners

Only less than 5% runners fall into this underpronation category! Anyway, I’m not pro runner, so don’t think this underpronation is an issue to me. OMG, this also explains why all my shoes bottom always end up damage in an unnatural way.

So according to Nike web site, they recommended me Nike LunarGlide+, one of the reasons, of course, this is their latest running shoes! Another reason is because these shoes can overcome my underpronation with the lightweight LunarLite foam support cushioning.Upon that, there are advantages such as super light weight, stability, Flywire technology and etc.

I did my homework by just google about this pair of shoes. Just too bad, Nike’s web site has faded out their earlier Lunar series running shoes such as LunarTrainer and LunarRacer.

My First Impressions

These three days half an hour jogging should be my first longest run I have after graduated from university. The shoes overall performance is very comfortable, superb lightweight and very bouncy for a running shoes! Must be the foam doing the work, not only absorb but also the return energy quite amazing. I’m quite satisfy with this as a casual runner.

I will find a day and take my running shoes for whole day long walk, see whether the cushion really can prevent my arch pain.

Price

The retail price in Singapore is SGD189 and in Malaysia is RM399. These shoes aren’t cheap. I seldom buy sport shoes and it is still quite reasonable than my leather shoes. I got mine at Queensway, with 15% discounts that make the price tag of SGD160. A currency exchange conversion math, RM399/2.46 = SGD 162. Getting these shoes from Malaysia is also another good option.

If feel the price tag quite steep, you can look for older Lunar series, because there are more discounts around, I saw 30% discount and I don’t think the technology is far lag behind since they are also using LunarLite foam.

Nike+

This is a pair of Nike+ shoes. There is a slot under the foam for Nike Sport sensor. The sensor can communicate with iPod and track down the runner’s speed, running pace and then upload your workout to internet, sharing with the rest of the world. Nike is very brilliant in doing this by bringing sports to the internet social networking.

However it is too bad currently Nike Sport sensor could only work with iPod Nano, 2nd gen iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS. My 1st gen iPod Touch will not work with this. Besides, I also saw some others complaining about that the sensor recognition is difficult and the inaccuracy of the sensor.

I think a better system can be built by just using iPhone. Since the iPhone built in GPS already can do the job. So users can have a more accurate running pace tracking and also can track your running path.

Additional Notes

When buying, please take note the shoes come in Men and Women. There are some differences for women:

The Women’s Nike LunarGlide+

Includes more soft foam under the heel than the men’s model and is more flexible under the forefoot because, on average, a woman weighs 10 to 15 percent less than a man of the same stature, and therefore has less mass with which to compress and flex a shoe’s midsole.

The women’s Nike LunarGlide+ has a two-part, gender-specific external heel counter engineered to accommodate a woman’s distinct needs for comfort, fit and support around the heel.

Nike has applied its Dynamic Fit Technology, a stretchy material, adjacent to the big toe, which expands to accommodate varying widths. Women tend to have broader forefeet which can lead to fit issues and abrasions.

how to determine ur feet is underpornate or not?

    • http://www.paikia.com paikia

check the video from Nike site..
my shoes all wore out the inner side

      • teckel

If your shoes wear on the inner side you OVERpronate not underpronate as you believe. If you underpronate, your shoes would wear only on the outside. Typically, only those with a very high arch underpronate.

This shoe is NOT for underpronators, this shoe is for neutral to mild overpronators. If you're an underpronator, this shoe will make it worse, not better. I understand you want to do your research, but it appears something was lost in the translation.

opps.. i replied wrongly. my shoes wear at the outer side.

This shoe not for underpronators? But from Nike official site, they show me this shoes is suitable for underpronation. Not sure whether their marketing just want to misdirect everyone to get this shoes.

So far, I'm still feeling good with the shoes.

It has posting, so it's not for true underpronators. Posting is support on the inside of your shoe, so if you underpronate and run in a shoe that has posting, you'll underpronate even more (feel like you're running on the outside of your feet).

Nike tries to claim the shoe is for everyone. But, it's really designed for neutral to moderate overpronators. A true underpronator has a very high arch and runs on the outside of their feet (this is very rare).

I'd seriously look at your shoes again. Don't look at the heals as that's quite normal to see heal wear on the outside of your shoes. Look at the front of your shoes instead to see where your lift-off wear is. If the wear is on the outside on the front of your shoes as well (towards your little toes), you are an underpronator. If the wear is more towards the middle or inside, you're a neutral or overpronator.

An ideal wear pattern on a shoe would be little to no wear on the heal (as heal-strikes are not how you should be running) wear in the middle of your shoe on the outside and wear in the front of your shoe in the middle. If you get a lot of heal wear, consider changing your gait to land more on the middle of your foot (slightly lean forward) and switching to a shoe with a lower heal (the Nike Lunarglide+ has a very high heal).
