Things You Should Know Before Buying Google Nexus One

By On January 11, 2010 Under Google, Handphone

Last week, Google announced the Nexus One phone. It is exciting news for consumers in Singapore, as we are lucky together with UK, HK and USA in the early adopter country list. I guess most of people have seen all the great things of what Nexus One can do, including turn-by-turn navigation, astonishing LCD screen, sexy and yet elegant design, super smooth UI and more.

Despite all good things you have heard, there are still a few points you need to aware of before placing order for your new Google Nexus One.

1. Only 190MB out of the 4GB space is allocated for Android Apps

The Nexus One allots only 190MB of its overall 4.5GB of memory for storing mobile apps, a tiny fraction of the app storage available on the Apple device.

This really depends how huge the file size of each apps. If each of the Android apps is around 10MB, then you could only get 19 apps installed on your phone. That would be quite miserable situation for such an advance smartphone. However, on Google side, they said they will address this issue and in near future allow the app storage on external flash card.

2. It will constantly switch between 3G and EDGE network

Their complaints centre on the phone constantly switching between 3G and the slower EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution) networks, resulting in tardy responses when they surf the Internet. Voice and SMS functions are unaffected.

This would be really frustrating bugs, but I think this is solely a software glitch. Consumers now could only hope Google will release new bug fix, or just simple setting of permanent deactivation of EDGE network would do it.

3. No multi touch

As we know, US phones mostly do not come with multi touch function since Apple has patented the technology. Nevertheless, you still to find some useful app on Android Marketplace to turn on this feature.

4. It doesn’t not support Chinese input yet.

You don’t have to worry this, soon or later, Google will have this included. But at the moment you can still go to Android Marketplace download an input method editor software called LIME IME. Then, import your preferable Chinese input method such as 拼音, 注音, 仓颉or many other various methods.
